Evaluating Potential Distributors in Taiwan

Evaluating Potential Distributors in Taiwan

How to evaluate distributor candidates in Taiwan without relying solely on trade show introductions.

Choosing a distributor in Taiwan is less about finding someone who says yes and more about confirming they can actually place your product where customers buy it. After reviewing dozens of distribution agreements for clients, we have seen the same screening gaps recur.

Start with channel proof, not enthusiasm

Ask each candidate to walk you through the last three product launches they handled in your category. Request specific retailer names, launch dates, and approximate sell-through. Enthusiasm without receipts is a warning sign.

Map conflict before exclusivity

Taiwan’s retail landscape is concentrated. A distributor with strong hypermarket relationships may already carry a competing brand under the same parent company. Request a written conflict disclosure covering all brands they represent in your product category — not just the ones they volunteer.

Reference calls that matter

Speak with at least two former principals, not just the references the distributor provides. Former suppliers often share why the relationship ended, which is more informative than current partners who may be contractually constrained.

Financial stability checks

Review publicly available registration data, recent capital changes, and payment terms they propose. Distributors under cash pressure sometimes use new supplier deposits to fund existing obligations.

Decision timeline

Allow six to eight weeks for thorough evaluation. Signing within two weeks of first meeting — common when expansion pressure is high — correlates with higher renegotiation rates within the first year.
